::What is 'Touch Typing'?::
‘Touch Typing’ is being able to type without looking at the keyboard. It is called ‘Touch Typing’ because it relies on the sense of touch initially to locate the ‘home row’ - placing the eight fingers in a horizontal row along the middle of the keyboard, from which they can then reach for the other keys. Most computer keyboards have a raised dot or bar on either the F/J keys or the D/K keys so that touch-typists can feel them when their fingertips are over the correct home row.
This is called the ‘home position’. From then on, the typist relies on physical memory to rapidly locate and tap the keys, resulting in very fast, accurate word processing. Using this method, touch typists invariably assume a good posture as well, as using the same correct body position when using the computer keyboard is integral to touch typing.
