What are keyboard skills?
Keyboard skills are the set of skills required to operate a computer keyboard fluently, and include an understanding of the layout and general functionality of computer keyboards.
Why are keyboard skills so important?
In an era where computer-based technologies are integral to learning and communicating, the acquisition of good keyboard skills, typing proficiency and finally touch typing will enable your child/ren to develop the following:
- Confidence in the use of ICT.
- The freedom to focus on creative thinking and creative writing, as opposed to the mechanics of typing.
- Speed and accuracy when producing written curriculum work using the computer.
- Correct sitting posture, thereby avoiding potential health risks associated with poor keyboard skills, especially upper limb disorders (including pains in the neck, arms, elbows, wrists, hands and fingers), which are often known as repetitive strain injury or RSI.
